Social Media Marketing FAIL: “Guaranteed Facebook Friends”

July 27, 2010 by Nancy

The world of social media marketing is relatively new, but not so new that there aren’t thousands of online posts telling you the “dos and don’ts” and the “no-nos” of utilizing the power of Facebook, Twitter, Myspace and all its spawn. Not to mention that common sense and decency usually dictates basic social media etiquette.

Social Media Stalking: Creepsters in the Internet Age

Chalk it up to overly protective Chinese parents, but I’ve always held a lot of things close to the chest. Perhaps they would prefer me not sharing some of my more embarrassing personal stories on the web, but I’ve come to appreciate the catharsis that comes with letting your thoughts, beliefs and sometimes secrets flow into the infinity of cyberspace. For me, it’s about drawing a line between sharing your humanity and sharing your identity.

For those of you who are active Twitter users, I encourage you to read the article, if only to satisfy your jeer quota for the day. I’m not even going to get into how barf-tastic this article was (“tweethearts,” “twilebrities”). This article is just an embarrassment to proponents who understand and utilize the power of social media for good.

One of the travel blogs that I follow, Roaming Tales, has taken a new approach to Follow Friday* on Twitter that I think is clever. Instead of posting a stream of @xxxes on her own Twitter account, she updates a page on her blog with the Twitter links to people she finds to be interesting, as well as an explanation of who they are and why they deserve recognition. I’ve decided to adopt a similar idea, but I’m going to take it one step further and give you reading material as well. Why? Because everyone should read, darn it.
